News Improving access and fairness when it comes to your pension

The LGPS Access and Fairness consultation changes have been introduced from 1 April 2026. The Government introduced these changes to make the LGPS scheme fairer for all members. The main areas affected are:

1. Fairer survivor benefits

Your spouse, civil partner or eligible cohabiting partner will receive a part of your pension. This is paid as a survivor pension. It will be paid for the rest of their life.

2. Changes to death grants

Removal of the age limit
The age limit for paying a lump sum death grant has been removed.

More discretion over who receives the death grant
Shropshire County Pension Fund no longer have to pay late death grants to personal representatives. Instead, it can use its discretion to choose the most appropriate beneficiaries.

3. Stronger protection when you are away from work

The changes to the below areas will help reduce the gender pensions gap by strengthening pension protection when members are away from work.

The fund is currently updating its website and all associated documentation. In the meantime, for detailed information regarding these changes, please refer to the official LGPS website and their article on Improving access and fairness in the LGPS.

Please note:
As a member of the pension fund, you do not need to take any action.
If these changes apply to you, we will contact you directly with further details.
